Square Footage
The first step is to figure out the overall square footage of the space you want to cover in rock. The math for calculating square footage is pretty straightforward, length x width. If the area you are covering is not a perfect square, split it up into squares or rectangles to get as close as you can, then add the sum of square feet together to come up with the total square footage.

Choose Rock Size
Landscape rock comes in many different sizes. You can browse the different types of rock here, and when you find the type you want, you’ll need to select a size. Most rock is measured in the following sizes:
- Fines
- 3/8″
- 1/2″
- 3/4″
- 1″
- 1″ x 4″
Calculate Total Tons
Once you have your square footage and rock size, you can now figure out how many tons you’ll need to cover the area. The most common depth for landscape rock is two inches, so the following calculations are done using that measurement.
Square Feet | Tons Recommended | |
Fines | 100 | 1 |
3/8″ | 140 | 1 |
1/2″ | 140 | 1 |
3/4″ | 120 | 1 |
1″ | 120 | 1 |
1″ x 4″ | 75 | 1 |
